Bereavement & Grief Counselling in Cardiff

Grief can affect us in many different ways. Following a bereavement or significant loss, you may experience sadness, anger, guilt, confusion, numbness or a sense that life has suddenly changed beyond recognition.

There is no single way to grieve and no set timescale for how long it should take. For some people, talking with a counsellor can provide a safe and confidential space to begin making sense of what they are experiencing.

I offer bereavement and grief counselling in Cardiff, providing compassionate, non-judgemental support at a pace that feels right for you.

Support following bereavement and loss

Bereavement can be overwhelming, whether a loss was expected or completely sudden. You may find that your emotions change from day to day, or that grief begins to affect other areas of your life such as sleep, relationships, work or your general wellbeing.

Sometimes the people around us want to help but may not know what to say. You may also feel pressure to appear as though you are coping, even when things still feel incredibly difficult.

Counselling gives you somewhere to talk openly about your loss without feeling that you need to protect other people from how you are feeling.

How bereavement counselling can help

Grief is a deeply personal experience, so counselling will be different for everyone. Rather than trying to tell you how you should feel, I will listen and work alongside you as you explore what your loss means to you.

For a number of years, I have also worked as a voluntary counsellor with Cruse Bereavement Support, the UK bereavement charity. This experience complements my private counselling work and my particular interest in supporting people through grief, bereavement and loss.

Counselling may help you:

  • Talk openly about the person or relationship you have lost

  • Understand and express difficult emotions

  • Explore feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety or loneliness

  • Adjust to changes in your life following a bereavement

  • Find ways of coping with anniversaries, reminders and significant dates

  • Understand how grief may be affecting relationships, work or everyday life

  • Begin to consider how life can move forward while continuing to remember the person you have lost

There is no expectation that you should simply “move on”. Counselling can instead help you find your own way of living alongside your loss.

Different experiences of grief

Bereavement is not always straightforward and there are many different circumstances in which someone may seek support.

You may have experienced the death of a partner, family member, friend or someone else who was important to you. Your loss may have followed a long illness, happened suddenly or occurred in particularly difficult circumstances.

You may also be experiencing anticipatory grief, where someone close to you is seriously ill and you are trying to cope with what may lie ahead.

Whatever your circumstances, your experience of grief is individual to you.

When might bereavement counselling be helpful?

There is no “correct” time to seek counselling after a bereavement.

Some people find support helpful soon after a loss, while others may only feel ready to talk months or even years later. Sometimes an older bereavement can also become difficult again following another loss or major change in life.

If your grief feels overwhelming, you are finding everyday life increasingly difficult or you simply feel that you would benefit from talking to someone outside your family and friendship circle, counselling may be worth considering.

What happens when you first contact me?

Making that first contact with a counsellor can feel like a big step, particularly when you are already dealing with bereavement.

I offer a free initial consultation, giving us an opportunity to talk briefly about what has brought you to counselling and what you may be hoping to gain from it.

You can also ask any questions you have about how I work. There is no obligation to continue afterwards; it is important that you feel comfortable with the counsellor you choose.
